What is the SASSA Child Grant?

The SASSA Child Support Grant is financial support by the South African Social Security Grant (SASSA) to primary caretakers of deserving children under 18 years. The purpose of the grant is to financially help the caretaker with necessities (Food, clothes, and shelter) involved in raising a child.

Qualification Criteria for SASSA Child Support Grant

To qualify for the SASSA child support grant, you must fulfill the below criteria:

  • Citizenship: You must be a South African Citizen, a permanent resident, an asylum seeker, or a refugee if you are the primary caretaker of the grant-deserving child.ย 
  • South African Residency: You (primary caretaker) and the SASSA grant candidate child must be residing in South Africa.ย 
  • Primary Custodian: If you are the SASSA child grant applicant, you must be the primary custodian of the concerned child.ย 
  • Age Criteria for the Child: The age of the nominated child must be below 18 years.
  • Application Limit: You cannot apply for more than six non-biological children as a SASSA child grant applicant.ย 
  • Child Upbringing: The children you are applying for an SASSA child grant must not have grown up in South African State institutions.
  • Caretakerโ€™s Income Criteria: Your income ( As a child caretaker ) should not be higher than R52 800 a year ( R4400 a month) as a single caretaker. If you are married your combined salary should not exceed R105600 per year (R8800 monthly).ย

Qualification Criteria For Foster Child Grant

The SASSA child grant is dedicated for the biological parents, but SASSA also provides the child grant for the foster parents. If you are the foster parent of a child, then you can get the Foster Care Grant. The eligibility criteria for the Foster Child Grant are as follows:

  • South African Citizenship: As a foster parent, you must be a South African Citizen, an asylum seeker, or a refugee with a valid permit.ย 
  • South African Residency: You ( The foster parent ) and the foster children must be current residents of South Africa.ย 
  • Legally Appointed Foster Parents: You must be a legally appointed foster parent for the SASSA grant-nominated child. Moreover, you must have child custody for the whole SASSA grant duration.

Why Can’t You Receive a SASSA Child Grant?

You cannot receive the SASSA child grant if you fall under these categories: 

  • You are already receiving a grant from any government institution.
  • You are receiving a payment from the South African government to care for a child ( Foster parent).ย 
  • You are a secondary caretaker of the grant-receiving child.ย 
  • You are part of a childcare institution.ย ย
