What to Expect During a SASSA Grant Review

The SASSA periodically reviews your grant status depending on which grant you are receiving. As per standard practice, you will receive a 90-day advance written notification for grant review.

Upon following all the instructions of notification, SASSA will restore, cancel, or adjust your grant payment as a final decision of review. I will explain the grant review process and associated requirements in this article. So, let’s go through it.

What is the Purpose of the SASSA Grant Review?

Here are the possible reasons for the SASSA grant review: 

  • The SASSA reviews to check whether the financial circumstances of grant recipients have improved or the same. Their income may have increased or decreased over time. 
  • To remove the fraudulent individuals from the SASSA grant beneficiaries list. 
  • To renew the expiring SASSA grant. 
  • To comply with an order from the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals.

How Often Does the SASSA Review A Grant Receiver Status?

The SASSA can review the grant beneficiary status at any time. However, It depends on the grant you are receiving. For example, the Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant recipient status is reviewed once a month. On the other hand, the other grant beneficiaries get reviewed yearly.

Documents Required For Grant Review

You need the following documents for a grant review: 

  • Your South African ID card.
  • Your 3-month bank statement. You also need to provide a 3-month bank statement of your spouse if you are married. 
  • Provide your latest payslip and that of your spouse. 
  • The proof of your residence. 
  • Give your children’s birth certificate (For Child Support Grant only).
  • Submit your medical assessment certificate (For Disability Grant and Care Dependency Grant only). 
  • Provide a life certificate for the SASSA record (for the grant receivers who get payment through bank transfer). 

Note: You can get this life certificate from the SASSA Office or request it by post.

Step-By-Step Guide For the SASSA Grant Review Process

The SASSA grant review is a 90 days process which involves the following steps:

Step 1: Receive the Grant Review Notification

The SASSA will send you a written notification to inform you about your grant review 03 months in advance. The notification will have instructions to follow for the review process.

Note: Please keep your contact details updated, as SASSA sends the grant review notification to the same contact details you provided in your grant application.

Step 2: Visit the Post Office

Next, Within a month of receiving the notification, you must visit the selected post office with the required documents.

Step 3: Possible Outcomes After Review

Now, the SASSA will take one of these possible decisions about the status of your grant after review:

1. Grant Restoration:

If you qualify for the grant in review according to the SASSA criteria, you will continue to receive the payment from its suspension date.

2. Grant Cancellation:

You can face the grant cancellation if you do not qualify for the SASSA grant in review.

Note: If SASSA has canceled your grant despite fulfilling all the criteria, but you consider yourself deserving. You can go to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals for an appeal within three months of the SASSA review decision.

3. Adjustment of Grant:

The SASSA may adjust your grant to a reduced amount if they observe in the review that you are receiving the grant amount more than you deserve.

Note: You cannot receive the grant, If you do not become part of the review process.

Which Grants Are Reviewed by SASSA?

SASSA does not review the Temporary Disability Grant because its expiry depends on the receiver’s medical examination. If it expires, the beneficiary can re-apply. However, SASSA reviews the Permanent Disability Grant once every 05 years. Moreover, the SASSA can also review it anytime to check whether the medical condition of the receiver has improved.

Similarly, the SASSA will review the Foster Child Grant upon the expiry of a court order. Likewise, the SRD grant can be extended by the SASSA after a review if the financial circumstances of the recipient remain unchanged.
