Breaking News: SASSA SRD R350 Grant is Increased to R370

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, also known as the R350 grant, will be increased from R350 to R370 starting in April 2024.

SASSA SRD R350 Grant Increased to R370

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced the increase in the National Assembly on Wednesday evening, March 13th, 2024. This adjustment represents a 5.7% increase, amounting to an R20 raise from R350 to R370.

This news comes as a welcome relief for the approximately 9 million South Africans who depend solely on the COVID-19 SRD grant and are struggling due to the rising cost of living.

Official Announcement of SRD Grant Increase

In his February budget speech 2024, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that the SRD grant would be increasing this year, but it was unclear from which month the increase would take place. Finally, the increase is officially announced.

Now, during his sitting in the National Assembly on March 13th, 2024, Minister Godongwana stated:

I am pleased to say that we have found consensus that in between, subject to the finalization of the comprehensive social security programme, we’ll increase the R350 to R370 by the 1st of April this year. That is part of the progressive realization of the basic rights of our people.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana

So, it is now clear that the R350 grant will be increased to R370 starting from April 2024.

Budget Allocation for Social Grants in 2024/2025

The R33.6 billion budget is allocated for social grants in 2024/2025. Initially, it was set to R36 billion, but due to some constraints, it was reduced to R33.6 billion.

However, the government still fulfills its commitment to social welfare by approving the increase in the SRD grant. This decision reflects the prioritization of supporting the citizens even in the face of budget constraints.

SASSA SRD Grant Extended Until March 2025

The SASSA SRD grant was initiated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which countless businesses were forced to close, and millions lost their jobs. Initially, it was to help the citizens during COVID-19, but later, the government recognized the ongoing need for support and subsequently extended the grant multiple times.

Building on this recognition, the government has further extended the grant until March 2025, with the possibility of further extensions.

Future of SRD Grant

The government has expressed interest in extending the SRD grant. However, securing a permanent source of funding remains a challenge. They are currently exploring ways to ensure consistent financial support for the program.

The Finance Minister addressed this issue during the MTBP (Medium Term Budget Policy) held on November 2nd, 2023:

“If that or a similar type of new grant is made permanent, beneficiaries are projected to expand from 27.3 million in 2023/24 to 40.4 million in 2040/41, which will cost 3.8 % of GDP in 2040/41 and require a corresponding permanent source of funding, such as additional revenue measures.”

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana

So, the future of SRD grants looks bright, but the government only needs to find ways to provide permanent funding. Hopefully, this announcement will be included in the next budget.

Conclusion

In summary, increasing the SASSA SRD R350 grant to R370, starting April 2024, provides much-needed relief for millions of South Africans struggling with rising living costs. Despite budget constraints, the government remains committed to supporting citizens, reflecting its dedication to social welfare.

      1. We all know very very clearly that R370 per month is not enough for anyone who really needs money.

I strongly advise that R1500 to rR500 is good for any person that’s in need in South Africa.

        1. Hi Stephan,

I agree with you. The government has increased spending, but only within their budget limits. Hopefully, they’ll increase it more to better support all citizens.

The reason showing as ‘null’ means that SASSA did not provide any explanation for canceling your grant. Please call the SASSA helpline at 0800 601 011 to find out the exact reason.

  8. It’s been declined since 2022 April,I didn’t receive anything,my status for declining is source income.

    1. Hi Irene,

It means that SASSA has identified that you already have a source of income. If you don’t have, then you can appeal your grant to get approval.

  9. Good morning
I can completely understand that R370 is better than R350. However this amount is not even enough to feed a single person for one week. Let alone transport fees to go and withdraw it. What about paying your rent. Our government is sadly far removed from the reality that our citizens experience on a daily basis.

Did you try to appeal your grant to prove to SASSA that you don’t have any income source?

  13. I applied in 2021,I was then approved, but because I checked every month, and there was nothing I stopped looking.

Then in 2022 I checked again, and saw my status approved, pay day 0.2023. I checked again, just to find out that some of the dates got approved with pay dates, I was then advised to update my banking details witch I did, but to this day all the approved statuses is without pay dates?
